WHAT IS THE LOCAL COMMITTEE NATIONAL TRAINING?
The National Training is our most important and exciting training of the year! Over 100+ Local Committee leaders from across Canada who share the same passion for education, international development, and youth engagement are invited. Members return to campus with newfound skills to help them lead their WUSC Local Committee and achieve its goals during the upcoming school year.
It’s a valuable opportunity for WUSC Local Committee members from across the country to connect with each other, but also:
Deepen their knowledge about global development issues and the Student Refugee Program (SRP) through hands-on workshops;
Get tips and tools to build a strong Local Committee;
Develop and improve their understanding of refugee sponsorship, the Local Committee’s responsibilities, and WUSC’s empowering approach towards youth and newcomers;
Learn more about WUSC’s campaigns and ways they can raise awareness on their campus.

THE 2026 LOCAL COMMITTEE NATIONAL TRAINING IN OTTAWA
From August 14 to 16, we will be hosting the 2026 national training for WUSC Local Committees in Ottawa, in partnership with the Government of Canada, the McCall MacBain Foundation, the Shapiro Foundation and WES.
Your WUSC Local Committee can send ONE member who will return to campus with the enhanced skills to make your Local Committee even more of a change-making force. Priority should be given to someone that has not attended a WUSC in-person training before.
Important details:
The appointed member is responsible for arranging their own transportation to Ottawa for the National Training. WUSC will offer a partial travel subsidy to eligible Local Committee members. See more about the travel subsidy below.
Accommodation at Algonquin College (check-in Thursday, August 13th - check-out Sunday, August 16th) and meals for the duration of the training will be covered for each participant;
Participants will have a private bedroom in a shared 2-bedroom suite. Each suite will be assigned based on participants' gender;
Each Local Committee can send one representative.
OVERVIEW OF THE SESSIONS
The sessions focus on the interlinkage between public engagement, the Student Refugee Program, and Local Committee management. Sessions are designed to be informative and engaging, emphasizing the relationship between the following areas: engaging the public to recruit members and build your Local Committee, to be then able to sponsor students.
Sessions also aim to strengthen members' understanding and knowledge of global development issues, WUSC programming and how it impacts their work on campus. All within a positive & inclusive space for WUSC Leaders to connect and share best practices.
WHO ATTENDS THE NATIONAL TRAINING?
Each Local Committee sends ONE representative who:
has been actively involved with this LC for at least 1 year (or is exempt because the LC was launched in 2025 or may be launched in the future),
is a returning member playing a greater leadership role in the coming year,
has been chosen by the LC to represent them at the 2026 National Training,
will be involved with the LC during the 2026-2027 school year,
is available and committed to attending all three days of training,
has not attended a WUSC in-person national training before (formerly called Leadership Meeting).
Please read below for Frequently Asked Questions about the Travel Subsidy.
What is the travel subsidy?
The travel subsidy is intended to help Local Committees partially fund their travel to the Ottawa-Gatineau region for the 2026 WUSC Local Committee National Training. Only participants who live outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region are eligible to apply for the subsidy.
In addition to the travel subsidy, each participant from outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region will also receive a dinner allowance of $30.85 for each dinner on August 13-15.
Participants must register for the National Training and apply for a subsidy by filling out section 4 of the registration form by June 30, 2026. Each Local Committee can appoint one member to attend the 2026 WUSC Local Committee National Training. Only ONE member per Local Committee is eligible to receive the travel subsidy.
IMPORTANT: The appointed member is responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Local Committee National Training. WUSC will not be arranging transportation on behalf of participants.
